Explore Shanghai.
A city of neighborhoods, on both sides of the river.

Shanghai offers several different versions of city life: central shopping streets, Xuhui's cultural walks, western residential areas and Pudong's parks. Choose the side of the river and the neighborhood that match your everyday destinations, then explore the rest at your own pace.

01

Get to know Shanghai.

Read Shanghai through the Huangpu River. Huangpu, Jing'an, Xuhui and Changning offer different starting points on the western side; Pudong opens up another set of destinations on the eastern bank. A citywide address search is less useful than choosing the side where you will spend most weekdays.

The appeal is variety within one city. You can build a routine around a park and library, spend an afternoon in a historic street area, or visit the West Bund's art spaces. For a longer stay, the useful question is which of these you want nearby often, rather than which landmark you want to visit once.

02

Is this your kind of city?

A good starting point if…

  • You enjoy an urban routine with culture, shopping and different districts to explore.
  • You are willing to choose a compact home base and use transport for the wider city.
  • You want to compare a central Puxi address with a Pudong park-based routine.

What to weigh up

  • A famous neighborhood name does not tell you the daily journey. Jing'an Temple and West Nanjing Road are separate station anchors; Gubei/Hongqiao Road is not the airport or railway hub.
  • Shanghai is not an all-year warm-weather base. Consider the season as carefully as the street, especially if you expect to walk outdoors every day.
03

Which neighborhood should you choose?

AREA 01

Jing’an Temple / West Nanjing Road

The municipal transport guide lists Jing’an Temple on Metro lines 2, 7 and 14, and West Nanjing Road on lines 2, 12 and 13. The two stations are different address anchors: compare the door-to-station route rather than searching only for “Jing’an”.

Why consider it

Start here if your shortlist needs to compare several central metro connections.

AREA 02

Xujiahui

The official Xuhui walking route links Xujiahui Park, Metro City, Zikawei Library and Grand Gateway 66. These are specific park, cultural and shopping anchors for comparing nearby addresses.

Why consider it

Compare this area if a park, shopping and cultural venues are useful anchors for your week.

AREA 03

Zhongshan Park

A municipal April 2026 transport guide identifies Zhongshan Park station on Metro lines 2, 3 and 4. Use the park and the station entrance you actually need as search anchors; listings across a whole district are not equally close.

Why consider it

Compare properties here if the Line 2/3/4 station suits the destinations you actually use.

AREA 04

Gubei / Hongqiao Road, Changning

The official Hongqiao Road heritage-area guide names Gubei Road, East Ronghua Road and South Shuicheng Road among its boundaries. These street names can narrow a western Shanghai search. Hongqiao Road and Gubei are not the Hongqiao Airport or railway-station address: check the exact destination.

Why consider it

Consider this western-city search area when your routine calls for Changning addresses.

AREA 05

Century Park, Pudong

The municipal park guide places Century Park in Pudong New Area at 1001 Jinxiu Road. The park is a location anchor; the guide does not verify the amenities or accessibility of a particular rental.

Why consider it

Start on this side of the river if your daily destinations are in Pudong; test any cross-river journey.

Places to live in each area

Once you have a daily base in mind, explore the serviced apartments in that part of the city. The addresses below cover several distinct areas; match the actual street to your routine.

WHERE TO LIVE

Huaihai Road & Xintiandi

Consider this central Huangpu base if Huaihai Road and Xintiandi are part of your everyday plans. Choose for the places you will return to, not just a first sightseeing visit.

WHERE TO LIVE

Gushan Road, Pudong

Consider an eastern-bank base when your daily destinations are in Pudong. The residence below is on Gushan Road; its Lujiazui name does not place it among the riverside towers or beside Century Park.

An ordinary week in Shanghai

Xujiahui: park, books and shopping

The municipal Xuhui walking route connects Xujiahui Park, Metro City, Zikawei Library and Grand Gateway 66. Use these as a way to explore the area before choosing a nearby address: a park walk, a reading stop and shopping can form separate parts of an ordinary week.

West Bund: art and the river

Another official route links TANK Shanghai, West Bund Museum, the Xuhui riverfront green space and Long Museum West Bund. Treat it as an area to return to, and compare the journey from your candidate neighborhood rather than assuming all Xuhui addresses are close.

Century Park: a Pudong starting point

If your regular destinations are in Pudong, use Century Park as one local anchor. Identify the entrance you would actually use, then compare the route from a prospective home to that entrance and to daily food shopping. A park-side search area is more useful than a vague request to stay in Pudong.

05

Choose a base around your journeys.

Start with a weekday destination, not an airport. Jing'an Temple, West Nanjing Road and Zhongshan Park have different metro connections; the best home base depends on which connection you will use repeatedly.

For Pudong–Puxi journeys, compare the complete trip from the door, including the station entrance and any change of trains. Keep occasional airport trips separate from the journey you will make several times a week.

06

When to stay in Shanghai

07

Where to stay: serviced apartments first

Start with a serviced apartment for your first longer stay in Shanghai. Look for a furnished space with the kitchen, laundry and managed services you need, and confirm what the exact room and rate include. Consider a regular rental when your neighborhood and longer-term plans are settled.

Choose an area, then a place to live.

Serviced-apartment recommendations are part of the area guide above, alongside the places and routines each address suits.

Read accommodation recommendations by area →

Under one month

Choose a serviced apartment as your first base, then explore two or three candidate neighborhoods. Use your everyday destinations to choose the address, rather than the skyline view alone.

One to three months

Prioritize a serviced apartment and request a monthly or full-stay quotation. Choose Puxi or Pudong first, then compare kitchen and laundry facilities, cleaning, utilities and access to your daily destinations.

Over three months

Keep a serviced apartment as the first choice if you want managed living. Once your neighborhood and plans are settled, consider a regular rental as an alternative and compare the complete cost and lease flexibility.

Shanghai local resources

Get arrival help with SIMs and payments

The municipal guide identifies international-arrivals service centers at Pudong Airport T1 and T2 and Hongqiao Airport T1. Services include SIM cards, mobile-payment assistance, transport cards and help with local apps. For a stay lasting several months, ask about the SIM's expiry, renewal and ongoing charges before choosing a plan.

Contact a medical service before relying on an app

The municipal international-medical directory lists Shanghai Ruidong Hospital at 120 East Jinxiu Road, Pudong, on 021-5833-9595, and Parkway MediCentre Xintiandi at 138 Middle Huaihai Road on 400-819-6622. Ask the chosen provider about your specialty, passport registration, language support and insurance arrangements. A directory listing does not establish that its booking app accepts your document.

Use the passport route in Suishenban

Shanghai’s published Suishenban guide describes English registration and manual photo review for a foreign passport, followed by access to its foreigner service area and Shanghai QR Code. Follow the current app prompts; this older guide does not establish a review deadline or passport support for every service. If a required task is unavailable online, ask its responsible office about a counter route.
