BEFORE YOUR CHINA CHAPTER

China visas.
A clearer way in.

Understand your entry options before choosing a lease or booking a longer stay. Start with your passport, your purpose, and the time you need.

01

Start with the right route.

Entry rules follow your travel document and visit purpose. Living overseas or having Chinese ancestry does not, by itself, determine which permission you need.

A SHORT VISIT

Check visa-free eligibility first.

An eligible passport and an allowed purpose may cover a short trip. Check the permitted length and travel area, not just the country name.

See the entry options →
A LONGER STAY

Match a visa to your purpose.

If your planned stay exceeds a visa-free allowance, apply for the appropriate visa before travel. A three-month itinerary is not permission for a 90-day stay.

Traveling on a foreign passport after previously holding Chinese nationality? Your local application checklist may ask for your former Chinese passport, prior visas, or other nationality-related documents. Check this early, especially for a first application.

Overseas Chinese: confirm which documents apply.

Chinese citizens living abroad generally use the applicable Chinese entry documents. Foreign nationals of Chinese origin use the foreign-national route when appropriate. For a child born abroad to a Chinese parent, nationality rules can affect whether a visa or a Chinese Travel Document is needed; a foreign passport alone does not resolve that question.

Ask the responsible Chinese mission about your circumstances and current document requirements before starting an application.

02

Visa-free does not mean one set of rules.

These are separate entry arrangements. Use the official passport and port lists to check your trip; an exemption for one route does not automatically apply to another.

30

30-day unilateral visa-free entry

Eligible ordinary-passport holders may make short visits for approved purposes, including tourism, business, family or friends visits, exchanges and transit. The allowance is up to 30 calendar days, counted from the day after entry. Work, study and news reporting require the appropriate authorization.

Bilateral visa exemptions

Each agreement defines which passport categories qualify, the maximum stay and any cumulative limit. An agreement listed for a country may cover only diplomatic or service passports. Check the actual agreement for an ordinary passport.

240HOURS / 小时

240-hour visa-free transit

This is a transit route of up to ten days for eligible ordinary-passport holders traveling onward to a third country or region. You need confirmed onward travel and must use designated ports and stay within the permitted areas. A simple return trip to the same country does not meet the third-country itinerary condition.

30HAINAN / 海南

Hainan regional visa-free entry

Eligible ordinary-passport holders may stay in Hainan for up to 30 days for the approved short-visit purposes. Work and study are excluded. This regional exemption does not authorize a trip to other parts of mainland China.

Check the Hainan rules

Check expiry dates as well as eligibility. Many temporary 30-day unilateral arrangements currently run through 31 December 2026; Russia’s has been extended through 31 December 2027. Dates differ by passport, so consult the latest notice for yours.

03

Find a visa for your purpose.

The categories below are common starting points. A category’s eligibility threshold is not a promise of the stay length that will be issued to you. The consular authority decides the visa details.

TypePurposeWhat to check
LTourismA holiday or sightseeing visit.
Q2Short family visitVisiting relatives who are Chinese citizens living in China, or foreigners with Chinese permanent residence; intended stay no more than 180 days.
Q1Family reunionFamily reunion with Chinese citizens or foreign permanent residents, for an intended stay over 180 days, or qualifying foster care. Residence-permit procedures follow entry.
S2Short family visit or private affairsVisiting eligible family members who are foreigners in China for work, study or other purposes, or qualifying private affairs; intended stay no more than 180 days.
S1Long family visit or private affairsFor intended stays over 180 days. The family-visit route covers spouses, parents, children under 18 and parents-in-law of foreigners residing in China for work or study. Qualifying private affairs are a separate basis.
M / FBusiness or exchangesM covers commercial and trade activities; F covers exchanges, visits, study tours and other non-commercial activities.
X2 / X1StudyX2 is for study no more than 180 days; X1 is for longer study. Admission and supporting documents are required.
ZWorkEmployment in China, with the required work authorization and supporting documents. A tourist or family visa is not a substitute.

Planning a retirement lifestyle? There is no general “retirement visa” in the ordinary-visa category list. The entry route must match a qualifying purpose, such as tourism or an eligible family visit. Q1 and Q2 require a qualifying family connection.

A practical application checklist.

Use the embassy, consulate or authorized visa center responsible for your place of application. The online system, appointment rules, biometrics, fees and processing times vary by location. Follow that office’s latest notice.

  1. Find the office and the exact checklist.

Choose the application location and visa purpose first. Check whether you must use the China Online Visa Application system or the local visa-center portal, and whether in-person submission is required.

  2. Gather identity and purpose documents.

    • Passport, photo and completed application form, meeting the local checklist.
    • Proof of lawful stay or residence if applying outside your country of nationality, when required.
    • Previous Chinese passports or visas when the checklist asks for them.
    • Supporting evidence for your category: itinerary or invitation, family relationship documents, admission papers, or work authorization.

Many local checklists require at least six months of passport validity and blank visa pages. First applications after a change from Chinese to foreign nationality may require the former Chinese passport; check previous-passport and name-change requirements too. Online preliminary approval is not the issued visa.

  3. Submit according to the local process.

Complete any online review, appointment, passport submission, interview or biometric step that your office requires. Use its published fees and collection instructions rather than assuming a worldwide price or turnaround.

  4. Read the issued visa before traveling.

Check your name, passport details, category, entry deadline, number of entries and permitted duration. If the details do not fit your plan, contact the issuing office before departure.

For a longer stay, prepare early and keep copies of your application, invitation, accommodation address and onward-travel details.

05

Three fields. Three different meanings.

ENTER BEFORE

Entry deadline

The period during which you may use the visa to enter, provided an entry remains. It is not the number of days you may stay after arrival.

ENTRIES

Number of entries

How many times the visa may be used during its validity: one, two, or multiple, as issued. Unused entries do not keep an expired visa valid.

DURATION OF EACH STAY

Time per visit

The permitted length of each visit. For an ordinary visa stating a number of days, the count begins the day after entry. Follow any residence-permit instructions that apply to your category.

A SIMPLE EXAMPLE

A visa valid for one year with “30 days” per stay does not permit one continuous year in China. Each visit must respect its 30-day limit, and each new entry must meet the visa’s validity and remaining-entry conditions.

06

The paperwork continues after arrival.

WITHIN 24 HOURS

Register your accommodation.

Hotels register foreign guests. At an apartment, private home or other non-hotel address, you or your host must register with local public security within 24 hours of arrival. Nationwide online registration became available on 21 September 2026 through the NIA website, app and mini programs. Arrange the host’s help for a first online registration at someone else’s home; an in-person police route remains available.

WITHIN 30 DAYS, IF REQUIRED

Apply for a residence permit.

If your visa requires a residence permit after entry, apply within 30 days. This commonly concerns Q1, S1, X1 and relevant Z visas. Contact the exit-entry administration where you intend to live and follow the instructions on your visa and for your category.

Official reference: Post-entry residence-permit instructions

Need more time? Act before your stay expires.

Visa holders seeking an extension must apply to the local exit-entry administration at least seven days before the permitted stay expires. Cumulative visa-stay extensions cannot exceed the original permitted stay. A visa-free visitor who needs additional time for appropriate reasons may need a stay permit. These are different procedures, and approval is not automatic.

07

Questions worth asking early.

Can I stay for three months on a tourist visa?

Only if the permission actually issued to you covers that stay. An L visa does not carry a universal 90-day entitlement. Read the duration on your visa and plan within the granted time.

Does a ten-year visa mean I can live in China for ten years?

No. A long validity period governs when the visa can be used for entry. The duration of each stay is separate and must be respected.

Is Q2 available just because I am of Chinese descent?

Chinese ancestry alone is not the category’s qualifying purpose. Q2 concerns eligible visits to relatives who are Chinese citizens living in China or foreigners with Chinese permanent residence. Check the invitation and family-document requirements for your application.

Can I use a short visa-free visit for work or study?

The unilateral 30-day and Hainan short-visit arrangements exclude work and study. Use the appropriate visa and authorization for the activity you actually plan to undertake.

Can I visit Hong Kong or Macao with mainland permission?

Hong Kong and Macao have separate entry rules. Check your eligibility for each destination. They may be third regions in a qualifying mainland transit itinerary, but all transit conditions still apply.

Are fees, fingerprints and processing times the same everywhere?

No. Requirements and temporary exemptions vary by application location and applicant. Use the latest instructions from the office handling your case.

A temporary fingerprint exemption currently covers short-term visa applicants with intended stays of no more than 180 days through 31 December 2026. Applicants whose visas require post-entry residence permits remain subject to the applicable collection rules. Recheck the local notice before submission.
