Get to know Dali.
The old town and Xiaguan are separate starting points. Within the old town, the south and west gates and the east gate also have different bus approaches. The precise gate in a listing is therefore useful information, rather than a minor address detail.
Is this your kind of city?
A good starting point if…
- You enjoy choosing a small walking area and exploring it repeatedly.
- You can weigh an old-town address against regular city-service trips.
What to weigh up
- An old-town stay does not remove journeys to Xiaguan. A gate on one side can also mean a different return route from a gate on the other.
Which neighborhood should you choose?
Xiaguan / railway station service corridor
Dali City's bus guide, marked updated December 2024, starts routes 4 and 8 at the railway station. Route 4 passes Xiyao market; route 8 passes Dali City Hospital and the northern coach station before the old town. These are documented urban service links, not current frequency guarantees.

Old town: compare south/west gates with east gate
The same December 2024 bus guide places route 4 along the South Gate, Honglongjing, Renmin Road junction and Sanyue Street. Route 8 instead serves the old town's East Gate and Zhonghe Road area. The gate and street of a listing therefore identify different bus approaches from Xiaguan.

An ordinary week in Dali
Xiaguan: follow the ordinary routes
The published bus guide connects the railway station, Xiyao market and Dali municipal hospital through different routes. Use these connections to compare a home for everyday errands with a home chosen mainly for old-town walks.
Choose a base around your journeys.
Compare the published route 4 approach to the old town's southern and western side with route 8 toward the east gate. Check current operations before relying on either; the guide describes routes, not a guaranteed frequency.
Where to stay: serviced apartments first
Start with a serviced apartment for your first longer stay in Dali. Look for a furnished space with the kitchen, laundry and managed services you need, and confirm what the exact room and rate include. Consider a regular rental when your neighborhood and longer-term plans are settled.
Under one month
Compare a managed apartment stay with a regular short rental near the exact gate or Xiaguan destination you want to explore.
One to three months
Before comparing housing types, choose old town versus Xiaguan and test the journey between them. A monthly quote is easier to judge after that choice.
Over three months
Prioritize market and medical journeys as well as walks. Search regular rentals and serviced apartments around that chosen daily base.

Dali entry and exit consultation contact
Dali City's government service directory lists police entry and exit windows 5–7 and telephone 0872-2261779. Ask which police station handles your intended address and which foreigner documents and host participation it needs. This directory does not establish that those windows themselves complete private accommodation registration; 12367 can also direct you.

Check a guesthouse's operator and payment details
Yunnan's justice department describes Dali's guesthouse credit publicity pilot: displayed QR codes can show business licences, responsible persons and other credentials. Ask the property to show its listing and match the contract and payment recipient to the operator. The credit display is not proof of foreign passport registration, ownership or an acceptable long stay contract.
